It is with no small degree of sadness that I announce the unanimous decision by a quorum of members at tonight’s Special General Meeting to disincorporate Victorian Leather Inc. after over a decade of service to the community.

Our website and social media platforms will be deactivated in three weeks, and our remaining funds will be donated to the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, along with some organisational ephemera, including photos and banners.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the past founding committee members, particularly those who founded the organisation, and the colleagues who have served alongside me over the past 18 months - thank you for your support, energy, enthusiasm, hard work, insight, knowledge, generosity, and example; it has been an honour to work with people who live their Leather values every day, through thick and thin.

    Yours in Leather,

    Tara Nipe, President

On behalf of the 2019/20 VLI committee

Last November, VLI’s first president, Nathan Nießen, committed suicide.  The loss of Nathan was felt by so many including members of VLI.  VLI in response and in its educational capacity have arranged a workshop to help support and strengthen our community.

While the combination of contributing factors are different for everyone, at times many of us feel distress, alienation, loneliness, despair, and being overwhelmed. These can be compounded when we are gender and sexually diverse, enjoy power dynamics, or practice BDSM. How do we care for ourselves, and for each other?

Our first New Guard Education Series for 2020 is a workshop designed by queer- and kink-friendly psychologist Vikki Sinnott to help participants weather life. The program includes reflection, optional participation, tools, strategies, handouts, and resources for afterwards.

VLI thanks Vikki for donating her time and knowledge to present this valuable workshop. All proceeds will go to Switchboard.

Switchboard Victoria provides peer-driven support services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, intersex, queer and asexual (LGBTIQA+) people, their families, allies and communities.

It is with heavy hearts that we say good bye to VLI’s founding president Nathan Niessen (Nießen).  He died as a result of a single vehicle accident in his home town of Lismore.

His vision for VLI was to create an organisation available to all to come together to explore the many mysteries and joys of a Leather Lifestyle.

He was a generous spirit who openly shared his personal challenges in the hope that it would help others to know they weren’t alone.

It was always such a joy to see him arrive at GearUp in his signature black and yellow leather and rubber, a cheeky grin on his face, and ready for whatever adventures the night ahead may bring.

May you find peace in this new chapter of your journey Nathan. Thank you for the life you lived. Your vision has changed the lives of many and you will be always remembered in our hearts.

Rest In Peace my beautiful friend.

    In Leather,

    Master Bella

Thanks to one of our wonderful sponsors, Eagle Leather, we are able to add even more fun to this weekend’s Finger to Fist workshop which is part of our New Guard Leather Education Series!

We are excited to announce that we will have an Eagle Leather mini-shop set up at the event with a range of quality products specially selected for the night's topic  If going into a store to browse is a little daunting then this might be just what you need.  Eagle Leather have also generously offered to contribute 20% from sales at the mini-shop  to our presenter’s charity of choice for the event, the Fitzroy Soup Van.

For those who don’t know, Eagle Leather is located just down the road (walking distance) from the workshop venue and will be open until 10pm that night should you wish to take a look at their full range!

We are excited to announce the commencement of our New Guard Educational Series as we endeavour to honour leather history and culture and allow it to change and evolve around us.

Funds raised from each event will be donated to the presenters charity of choice.

The leather community has a long history of fundraising for community initiatives and organisations within the LGBTIQA+ community, from historic and current responses to HIV/AIDS through to helplines catering to the communities mental health needs.  VLI has raised money to donate to various LGBTIQA+ and related community organisations in the past and are committed to continuing this.

The series will kick off on Saturday April 13th with Leather Service 101 and be held on the second Saturday of each month.

Discounted pricing will be available to VicLeather members and sales are open to members first.  If you're not already a member, you can visit our membership page to submit your application.  New members will be eligible for the discounted tickets.

Earlier this month, members of the committee caught up with Sharrin (IMsLBB), Pat (IMsL Foundation) and Girl Ang (IMsL 2018), for a great night in Lygon Street.  We hope Sharrin and Pat enjoyed the remainder of their trip to Australia and we look forward to hearing more about Girl Ang's travels, adventures and IMsL experiences once she has completed her IMsL title year!

A big thank you to those who came along to the Chill Out March in Daylesford whether you walked with us or were one of the amazing cheering crowd.  The atmosphere was fantastic and hearing the crowd cheer as they saw us was wonderful.  There were even some excited squeels from adults and children alike as our rainbow storm trooper came into view.  Thank you also to the awesome pups that marched with us.  Here is a photo of some of us getting ready at muster.
